Rooted in Classroom Experience

LearnShift represents the evolution of thought and practice teachers experience as they consider the use of digital media and tools in their practice.  As a cohort of Teacher Innovators who spent years experimenting with how to effectively use digital media and tools to support student learning, each of us has experienced that shift in our thinking - the ah-ha moment - as we learned a new tool and then imagined how it could change a lesson.  Over time, we found another type of shift happening as we moved from our own use of the tools, thinking teacher-centered use of technology, to how the students could use them, learner-centered designs for learning, assessment and mastery of content.

Our Coaching Philosophy

Learning to shift to new learning tools is a journey, not a quick trip.  We hope to help teachers experiment with new tools for learning then consider how they might use them with their students.  As they reinvent and reimagine lessons, we hope they will grow in their practice as they design new learning experiences for themselves and their students.

We respect that teachers spend years honing their practice to develop fine-tuned skills in managing the learning process.  Navigating the balance between the subject to be taught, the best methods and the activities needed to meet the needs of learners in front of you is a daily challenge.  Sudden immersion into online and remote learning means rethinking each of those steps!  Teachers must navigate new paths to support teaching, learning and mastery.

Service to Others & Giving Back

Philanthropy:  We are incredibly grateful for the support our districts, schools and colleagues have given us. Through the philanthropic organization, NapaLearns', we received fellowship awards to explore a vision for the future of learning in the Innovative Learning Master's degree program with Dr. Pamela Redmond at Touro University California.  In turn, we have been looking for a way to share our research and deeper learning about using digital media and tools to prepare students for the future workforce and to create more equitable learning opportunities for students.  We want to give back and walk the walk of being innovation leaders.

21st Century Learning

To be prepared for their future, students must learn more than the content standards.  They must become transliterate - able to communicate and learn across a multitude of evolving media platforms.  They must also experience learning in a culture that nurtures the development of personal character traits such as those identified by p21.org:  21st century learning skills of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking that will be essential to their success.  They must master ethical guidelines for using digital tools and media.  The image below represents the current framework derived from the work of P21 now entitled BattelleforKids that represents the complex nature of the learning shifts needed for the future.
